Year of the Category Challenge: Rules and Sign Up

2008 December 23
by kmont

A while back, I caught onto the glamorous excitement that is those flashy Harlequin category titles that I’d seen discussed around the Blogosphere. Billionaire secret babies and Greek tycoons marrying their ironically virgin mistress Albanian princess lover. Who wouldn’t want a piece of that once in a while. The books, I mean.

And there was a pretty good response on doing a reading challenge. So this is it.

Rules:

1. Book reviews can be posted any time during the last week of each month. I want this to be as relaxed as possible, so no set day other than during that week.

2. You can choose a new or old category romance to read/review from ANY of Harlequin or Silouhette’s lines. I’ve been perusing the line names on their ebook site. So Harlequin Blaze, Historical, Presents, Superromance or Silhouette Desire, Nocturne, etc. – it all goes.

3. Please indicate clearly in the title of your review that it belongs with this reading challenge. Elsie’s Year of the Category #2, or Year of the Category: The Billionaire Boy Band’s Drummer and the Waitress Who Served Him.

4. No restrictions or any such nonsense on the reviews – write ‘em however you want, but I would appreciate efforts made at more than a three-line paragraph.

5. Please link back to this post when you do a Year of the Category review or I may post a list of participants and you can link that one if you prefer.

I would offer a prize…and I will! In order to be eligible for it, you have to have reviewed one category romance a month following the rules above. I’ll check with the links you use back to this blog. The winner has a chance at a $50 Amazon gift card, or B&N or Borders if that is their choice. If more than one challenger is eligible, we’ll do a drawing for it. Who knows, I may add more prizes too. Might not. Wheeeee!

I reserve the right to change or alter or add rules as my coffee-deprived mind thinks of them. But I promise not to do that a lot. Really. It might not happen at all. Seriously.

I do hope though that this challenge will just be fun, as it seems to me that that’s what category romances are all about. I’ve got all but one of my twelve titles picked out. So you get ta cracking too! Please sign up in comments if you wish to participate  and don’t forget to link back every time you write those reviews! Pretty please.

ETA: Yes, there will be a graphic you can use on your site or blog, optional, and I will add it later today.

And here it is:

If anyone needs this emailed, just let me know and I will shoot it your way.

This is just to read one category a month? Now or old, doesn’t matter? Hmmmmm. This does sound like fun and I have TON of these categories in my ereader. Yeah, sign me up, I think I’d like to participate in this.

  2. 2008 December 23

should say “new or old” Sheesh.

Yep, new or old, either is fine. Thank you for that suggestion, I will add that into the rules. :)

I hope I thought enough about this – it’s my first reading challenge host job. Alas, I probably forgot something else too. :(

Oops, meant to say too that yes, one a month. Thanks for signing up!

Why not…I’ll join. :-) Dance card’s pretty full, though. And that “last week of the month” thing will probably trip me up.

One the bright side, I have plenty to choose from. Just have to figure out how to work them in with the other challenges.

Misscz, I have seen all those challenges you do! I don’t know how you do it, but I salute you. :D

And psssst! If you have to post a day or two after that requisite week, we can probably let that slide. I have a feeling I will be late a time or two myself. I hope you just have fun with it more than anything. Thanks for signing up!

OK, I’m totllay into this. I love me categories.

    Woot. WHat fun.

Are we getting a spiffy little Kmont original graphic?

*Slaps forehead* Yes! There will be a graphic. I will post it in this post as soon as possible. I wanted to go ahead and get the rules up so fiolks could decide whether or not to join in. The graphic will be up by end of the day. Hopefully. Cross your fingers lol. And glad to see you signing up!

  5. 2008 December 23

Yay!! I was wondering if you were gonna cave to my peer pressure to do this! :P

    Sign me up!

Christine, awesome!! And yes, I totally caved to your wild threats and probably the absolute worst peer pressure I have ever experienced. So thanks lol!

    Betty Neels here I come!!!!

  8. 2008 December 23

Count me in! I’ve got ten so far sitting in a lovely stack waiting to be read.

I’m really curious to read the Jessica Bird ones. It will be interesting to see how/if the writing style differs from the BDB.

And two of Nalini’s are there as well. Love her writing!

    I LOVE the icon…so classy!

Can I ask a quick question? Do they have to be new reads or can they be re-reads/comfort reads?

    • 2008 December 23
      kmont permalink

Glad you like it, Sayuri! And yes, the books can be older or new titles. They can be a re-read. Anything goes as long as it’s a category.

No problem, Misscz! Whatever it takes to make it easier, especially for you with all those challenges lol.

Kmont — Thanks! :-) The key, for me, is to find books that can count on multiple challenges and avoid locked-in-stone book list requirements. Flexible=good. Oh, and limit myself to the number of 12-book-in-12-months challenges.

    I’m a little late but I’m joining!

  12. 2009 January 4

Count me in! I’m up for anything that will get me reviewing again, and I lurrrve me some category.

  13. 2009 January 5

Alright, I was going to ask the same question that Keishon asked but since you answered that already, I’m good to go. Can I still enter this challenge? This year, it’s going to be the year of the challenges for me. I’d like to sign up for this one as well, if I could. Thanks for hosting this one, I want to read more Harlequin categories!

    • 2009 January 5
      kmont permalink

Of course you can, Rowena! I suppose it’s OK to sign up all the way till the last week of January, so long as you can get a book read and review posted in time. It’s possible!

  14. 2009 January 5

Cool, I’m starting right now then! Thanks for hosting this!

Am I too late to join??

Nope, you are not too late! C’mon on in! We’ve got sheiks, billionaires, werewolf sheiks, intrigue, sheiks, tycoons, sheiks.

  16. 2009 January 8

Yeah, but are there any sheiks?

Thanks for letting me join! I’ve got a ton of category suspense at home – good reason to pick one and finally read it!

    Wait, werewolf sheiks? bwahahahaha!!!

LOL, no problem, Tracy. Can’t wait to see what you read!

And I admit, Sayuri has topped my werewolf sheik! Wait, that’s be an entirely different kind of romance, eh?

  17. 2009 January 9

Yeah, but do you have ‘billionaire vampire greek tycoons’?
