Any Given Doomsday

Mark your calendars: November 4, 2008.

From Amazon.com…

Elizabeth Phoenix once used her unique skills as a psychic to help in the Milwaukee Police Department’s fight against injustice. But when Liz’s foster mother is found viciously murdered—and Liz is discovered unconscious at the scene—her only memory of the crime comes in the form of terrifying dreams…of creatures more horrific than anything Liz has seen in real life. What do these visions mean? And what in the world do they have to do with her former lover, Jimmy Sanducci?

While the police question Jimmy in the murder, Jimmy opens Liz’s eyes to a supernatural war that has raged since the dawn of time in which innocent people are hunted by malevolent beings disguised as humans. Only a chosen few have the ability to fight their evil, and Jimmy believes Liz is among them. Now, with her senses heightened, new feelings are rising within Liz—ones that re-ignite her dangerous attraction to Jimmy. But Jimmy has a secret that will rock Liz to her core…and put the survival of the human race in peril.

Handeland’s writing is a fave of mine. I’ll pull out my often-used descriptor of it: bare bones. By that I mean dry-roasted wit, some of the most descriptive writing with the least amount of words. In other words, it’s lean on fat, high in protein. Oh hell, she just has this really awesome style. There.

I first got the impression months ago that this would be more a mainstream paranormal. Handeland says Urban Fantasy, but that description spells romance. To that I say BOOOYOOOOW!

Don’t you think her abs are saying, Look at me, I’m so fine, buy me, buy me…

I wonder why the series title, The Phoenix Chrnicles has an X through it? Oh wait, silly me *embarrassed giggle* that’s probably a…phoenix.

Book dos, Doomsday Can Wait, comes out May 2009.

Oooh, it looks good. I like the cover, man I want her abs, I’m getting an ice cream pouch.. Damn you Haagan Dazs!

I’ll add this one to my list, thanks for the heads-up!

Ice cream pouch! Now that sounds awesome! Your own built in ice cream pouch…on second thought, no…just, no.

I have a baby/cheesecake/Johnny Depp pouch. Did you know cute actors were fattening? No? Well it’s true, you’d think they’d be more aerobic, get the heart rate going, but no. They’re actually very fattening. They’re really good with a side of cheesecake.

Oh wait, NOW I see the correlation.

Notice how that chica didn’t get beheaded, nor were her best features obscured by title or author name.

Though if Liz is gnna fight dat evil, she needs to toughen up, I’m guessing. She just looks cute as a button in the face. Kinda looks like Kate from the John and Kate Plus Eight TLC show too.

K, I see we just had a major revelation, heheh.

Sure I’m weak when it comes to ice cream but at least I’m able to stay away from the cheesecake. And the Johnny Depp. For the most part. :D

I’ve only read a short story by the author but I really liked it. Not sure why I’ve never managed to though. She’s a great author!

Ladytink, if you like werewolves and such., I highly recommend her “moon” series, which later changed to the Nightcreature series.

    Blue Moon
    Hunter’s Moon
    Dark Moon
    Crescent Moon
    Midnight Moon
    Rising Moon
    Hidden Moon
    Thunder Moon

The last seemed to be the end of the series; their was this strange epilogue to explain this secret organization’s movements and it sounded like the end. Supposedly, according to an email I shot over to Handeland, she wasn’t sure if the pub would continue with the series or not.

Thanks for the reminder. Loved the moon series and it looks like Handeland will continue with strong female characters. Handeland’s writing is, as you say, bare bone. Yet she conveys soooo much. BTW, the X looks like two crossed daggers. Weapons of choice maybe?

Cover model – yes, she does look like Kate. Love that show. John and Kate are so funny and real. Just saw the Disney World episode. Driving 19 hours with 8 kids?! Brave or crazy not sure which. lol

I am such a huge Lori Handeland fan! I also love, love her writing style. She can make you see what’s happening in her stories. I’m really looking forward to her new series. If it’s anything like the last one, it will be another favorite.

Hils, as you know, we are in the same boat. I’m hoping for something different yet also bearing the Handeland “signature”.
